Ink Season

7/19/2017

Picture
These last months have involved an inordinate amount of movement:
packing, unpacking, packing again, doing travel laundry.
I can make yarn wherever I am, thank goodness,
but since I like my summer days to look like this:
Picture
as they did last summer,
rather than this
Picture
as they seem to this summer,
it takes a certain amount of effort
to make sure I'm not mentally half out the door all the time.

Happily, while I was off on some trip or other,
my husband made me this fabulous light table:
Picture

He started with old wooden shipping box,
fixed strips of LED lights to the bottom,
and put a piece of frosted glass on top,
Picture
so when I'm home I can at least draw warp and weft,
remember the pleasures (and frustrations) of my backstrap explorations of the last year,
and work on this other project -- a thing that you probably already figured out about from the drawings in previous posts-- that i'm calling a comic instructional memoir.
Picture
pen and ink -- wonderful except when you inadvertently go over instead of under the knitting needle at the top of the loom...
There is still  a lot of work to do  -- not only writing and inking
(then re-writing and re-inking),
and hopping back and forth between contemporary and medieval technology,
but also scanning, fixing ink blots, deciding about color (yes? no? watercolor? digital color?), figuring out about printing (me? someone else?),  actually getting them printed etc,
but eventually I hope I'll be able to talk about it more specifically
as I get closer to getting this new zine into my etsy shop to keep company with How To Weave A Bag On A Box.

And in the meantime, I will pretend my days are only full of these:

and these,
Picture
and that more packing is not hovering on the horizon.

Happy summer, my friends!

Wait! What is that fabulous looking instrument in the last picture? It has 3 strings and vaguely resembles my travel dulcimer but, I see bows. Must know! :)

Hi Chriss -- it's a backpack fiddle called a WhipLStix: http://www.wiplstix.com/ws/what_is_wiplstix.html
It has four strings tuned GDAE like any violin, and plays like one only very quiet. Excellent for learning tunes by ear as I can hear the recording and the instrument at the same time. Also practicing when you don't want to be overheard.
Didn't know there were travel dulcimers too!

Thanks Sarah! Very intriguing. May have to get one. My travel dulcimer is a Feather Dulcimer. I love small instruments. And spindles and wee Tapestry looms too.

I laughed and laughed about the "bare bones supplies" drawing. SO true!! I love the light table! I bet I'm smart enough to make something similar though not so good with wood as your husband is... I suppose the window works pretty well most of the time. :-)

Yes like the light box! Never thought of using LED lights inside one, didn't know you could get strips of them? Where did he get them from and are they battery or plug ins? Also love the instrument! Great idea too! Thanks for all the wonderful inspiration Sarah!

Hi Janie -- Dan bought a long strip at a building supply place -- it came with connectors (for cutting apart and making right angles), the stuff to plug it in (alas this wasn't battery powered, but maybe that exists too?), and a remote for turning it on and off and even dimming.

So glad you like it! Me too.

Travel is hard for me too, Sarah. I take along some knitting when I go because in my fibers I am home no matter where I am. Looking forward to your new 'zine.
