Luminist's Winter

11/21/2020

Picture
You know how sometimes
the path ahead
is clear and straight --
and then suddenly
 you find yourself
bare of foot
and knee deep
in snow--
 or wildflowers?
Picture
Happens pretty regularly for me, actually --
in life, in days, in projects.
Indeed what, really, is a plan?

This linsey woolsey cloth,
for instance,
was definitely destined
to be another shirt.
Picture
And that red roll of cloth--
I was absolutely going to stitch it
to the yellow swathe.
Picture
As for this
 four selvedge tapestry--
had it ever  thought of itself
as anything but an independent entity--
much less considered that it would insist upon
being part of a blanket?
Picture
And what is with
the pieced blanket thing anyway?
Picture
Linsey-woolsey,
woolsey-woolsey

woolsey-tapestry
(and even a bit of silky-woolsey),

can't possibly all fit--
Picture
much less flow--
or glow--
as one.
Picture
Or ---can they?
Picture
Well, why not?

As already demonstrated
I'm pretty terrible
at predicting the outcome of things--
Picture
be it
 the world--
 a year--

 a country--
a blanket--

or a blog.
Picture

To which end
here at the end
and before I become further distracted
by light shining through plain weave
or make the mistake
of attempting to sum up this weirdest of years
(which, of course, is still a month and a half from being over),
I'm going to close with a list
of things I don't want to forget to mention today:

1. Fringeless,
the online Four Selvage Tapestry Class
I teach with Rebecca Mezoff ,
is 25% off, now through Fyber Monday (30 November)
with the code  FyberFringe
(because it is WAY easier to for a tapestry
to be an integral parts of your blanket
when there are no hems to worry about--
just saying!)
Picture
2. Rebecca's List of  Fantastic new Tapestry Books
is on her blog and totally worth checking out.
Her reviews (linked in the post)
are thorough and compelling--
but then that is true of everything she does.
And---multiple tapestry books?  I mean!

3. A couple of new Natural Dye Resources
have come to my attention
(and I'm sure there are many more):
--Journeys in Natural Dying--
(color without leaving home)
and
The Maiwa School of Textiles free Classes
(to be followed on 1 December with winter workshop offerings)

4. I'm totally in love with The Tatter Textile Library ,
an intersectional textile portal of goodness,
(with its own line up of compelling classes
and skilled makers),
as well as a spectacular new online journal,
TATTER,
which has engrossed me for the last few days--
each essay/maker profile/feature its own portal to a different kind of
textile yumptiousness (if that is a word),
 that
I've  just begun to explore.
Picture
5.  As a present to myself
I've made the somewhat surprising
(and weirdly delicious) decision
to stop blogging for the winter--
to give over this time
to other voices/ideas
and my inner Luminist.

As you might imagine
the latter will take a little practice,
for my inner Storymaker loves to write this blog--
her hand-in-the-air compulsion
to explain, describe and generally dominate my creative world
a driving force in much of what I do.

Nonetheless,
and because I don't  know
what is going to happen,
I will attempt to enlist her aid
and (respectfully) request that for this time
she turn her interactive skills
to the important task
of making space
for whatever shows up--
and then refrain from talking about it.

We'll see how it goes...

(Truth be told, and realistically,
she already has a couple of things in the works
that should keep her decently occupied till spring
which may, or may not ease the way for the Luminist).
Picture
How ever it unfolds,
I'll see you in March, my friend,
and till then,
stay safe, be well,
 have fun,
and make stuff as you like and can.

Thank you as always for sharing your journey. I wish the Luminist and the Storymaker a wonderful exploration of what the next few months may bring. It seems like an appropriate time to give the inner creative a time to make and grow. See you in the spring!

Although I am going to miss your inspirations and your stories, I also know we all have to call time out. I can’t wait to see what comes next. Stay safe, stay well, and best wishes for your holiday from all of us.

Ah,so inspiring, I have had the Korean ramie type cloth, the book, just waiting for;the right moment...I love this work......and that you have inspired us constantly...breath, create, and be safe, until we meet again..

Sarah, I understand aging and I understand slowing down. Just please promise us one thing....
that we can still write to you.
Many moons ago i wrote an email to you from the Atlantic Coast when i read your story
In Melanie Falick's book. You emailed me back and answered my questions never knowing how much that meant to my weaving life and direction. I still consider you to be one very talented artist and have your photos taped to my big Fireside loom for examples of exemplary shading. Please
promise us your help and advice
when needed. Thanks.

The blanket is beautiful and I love the tapestry of you and your instrument which I forget the name of at the moment, but so enjoyed your music in the Fringeless class. Best wishes for a relaxed break, joyful holidays and a hearty celebration on Jan 20!

In grateful appreciation of your drawings, words, inspiration to me and many other makers. I have wanted to learn backstrap weaving. Now I will!

Oh how I will miss your weekly newsletters and blog posts! But how throughly happy I am for you to take a break from so much technology and having to put to words what is in the end, indescribable! Thank you Sarah for being such an inspiration to me , even in this taking of a break! And your making a blanket out of weaving fragments...yes, I believe I shall dig out the voluminous amounts of woven yardage and see if I too can make a blanket from it. Perhaps even a little tapestry in there too! Thank you and do take monumental care of yourself and your husband, as I’m sure you have been doing already!❤️🧶👩🏻‍🎨😍

You have inspired me to try backstrap weaving, so while you are having a break from your blogging and having other adventures, I will enjoy developing my skill at backstrap weaving and continue with spinning and tablet weaving and making tiny tapestries and.......

My first thought was Oh No! I'll miss hearing from you each week - see it's all about Me! My second thought was Hope you have a lovely break! (I do have some redeeming features . . .).
Anyway I've now realised that I don't have to go without your weekly joy- every Wednesday I'm going to read one of your earlier posts, starting at the beginning in April 2014.
So have fun! - we can delve into your archives for inspiration until you return.

Oh Sarah, I will miss your presence in my life, via this blog. But as one who has also, from time to time, been required to heed my own internal call to step outside or step away, I cannot begrudge you the time and space you want and need. I imagine that it will be a brilliant time for you and yours. I hope that all of the curveballs and surprises life throws at you will be gentle and of the creative, fulfilling sort. I hope that you, your husband and the rest of your loved one stay safe and healthy (however you define it). Most of all, I wish you peace and as many joyous forms of excitement, curiosity and engagement that you can stand. All the best, David

Well, I shall miss you too. Your blog has been a Tuesday highlight this dreary year. I'll just have to explore older posts each Tuesday to fill the void. And make things, always. Thanks for all you share, good health to you and yours, enjoy the break, and celebrate regime change!

Perfect time for a break! You do need one now and then.

I will miss my weekly shot of inspiration which you so generously provide, but I can carry on with my winter slate of weaving projects and study until you show up again.

Please take care and stay safe.

Have a wonderful time concentrating on yourself and your own and seeing where the time takes you. I think of you every time I wind spindle singles on to stick to ply off, as well as other occasions. Thank you for sharing so much.

You bring such light to so many in a troubling time. We can only wish your Luminist the greatest journey and your Storyteller the best memory so she can bring back those stories to us when your journey brings you back here again...I can't imagine the beauties you will create. Rest, rejuvenate, and be safe.

Sarah, enjoy your much-needed break from technology, and thank you for being you. I wish I could as easily cut the cord. But especially, thank you for your tapestries, linen, which I am now exploring in fiber and yarn, Hepty spindles, backstrap weaving, and Jack, my baritone English concertina. He is entirely your fault, and a wonderful companion. Please "do you," play your own music, and best wishes for a restful winter for you and your other half.

A much deserved "rest" though I imagine your creations will multiply infinitely. Thank you for your inspiration since I "discovered" your work this spring. One of COVID's gifts to me.

May the Storymaker own up only when called and may the Luminist shine fourth to bring out something amazing that I feel sure is brewing just under the surface and begging to come out - can't wait to see what emerges.
I am so delighted you are making time for a break and in that giving us all a good lead on taking care of your inner voices.
Have a glorious time, enjoy whatever decides to show up and look forward to seeing you pop up when the time is right. Stay safe, stay healthy and be happy!

Chère Sarah,

Votre blog est comme une lumière et comme un soutien dans la vie, je trouve. Il va beaucoup me manquer, vous allez me manquer.

Mais l'important est que vous soyez bien, heureuse et en accord avec vos souhaits que vous réalisez ! Alors je m'en réjouis pour vous !

J'attends avec joie le mois de mars !
Prenez soin de vous !
Grand merci !

A mars!

Happy that "Happy One" made it to my studio before the winds of winter set in. She and I are happy up high in the studio. May this be a time of renewal and new beginnings for you and yours.

Greetings Sarah, you and I spent the afternoon together, via YouTube. As I sipped a warm chai tea, as it was a very cold day in Florida, I so enjoyed your company, and your humor, it was as if you were actually here with me.. I was gifted with a very large tv, smart tv, so now I can watch all my weaving videos on large screen, last month , after waiting 2 years, I finally got a mirrix Zach, you and Rebecca have been my saving grace, for which I am so grateful, for you both sharing your god given gift of weaving... I feel like I have two new friends... thank you,
