tapestry or sweater--whose blog post is this?

11/25/2019

Picture
Four Selvedge Warp; wool; walnut dye
Last night I cast off the last stitches
of my fourth Somewhat Slanted Sweater.
Picture
This morning I gave it a good bath.
I mean.
White fleece?
Spinning, plying and knitting as I go?
For months?
Lots of time on the road?
Talk about a grime magnet.
And who is going to wash her hands
every time she picks up
spindles or needles?
Well, maybe you.
Alas, not me.
Picture
Anyway, it should be dry by tomorrow
so I can try it on all clean and blocked.

For some reason,
these somewhat slanted sweaters
fit quite differently before
and after
blocking --
esp the sleeves
which  have a tendency
to
lengthen--
(knitter beware...)
so there is not much point in taking photos
until it has finished this growth spurt.
Picture
Sleeve increase aside,
I'm amazed at how individual
each version is--
as individual, indeed,
as those that I've seen
made by other people.
Picture
For there have, by now,
been a fair few made
and I'm super excited
because the Somewhat Slanted pattern
 and the Sarah-Dippity Skirt
now have their own Ravelry Pages.
so other versions can be linked.
Picture
Here, for instance, is Vicki's version.
I totally adore how she made an elegant wide neck
then added crochet cross straps

to keep the shoulders from sliding down.
Picture
Getting this Ravelry page up
is a thing I've been meaning to do for ages
and can't thank Vicki enough
for helping me make it happen--
and also the wonderful Ravelry team
for linking these two patterns
to patterns I've produced over the years
 (for other publications).
Picture
Because Ravelry is a knitting site, however,
my two weaving PDFs can't go there
(at least as far as I know),
and it may be because of this
that instead of process photos
of the new sweater,
this blog post has been taken over
by a wool and paper conspiracy:
Picture
 an indigo swirl
making its sinuous way
up walnut dyed wool warp
with the full support and consent
of a bunch of used coffee filter yarn.
Picture
It is a bit  high-handed--
though as you may have noticed
my materials have no compunctions
about bossing me around,
and a four selvedge warp
can reduce me to a state
of worshipful acquiescence
every time.
But really,
who could resist being seduced
by such yarnish loveliness?
Picture
Anyway,
assuming the tapestry loom doesn't get bossy again,
I'll hopefully have a few photos
of the finished Somewhat Slanted Sweater
by next tuesday.
Picture
Three Needle Bind Off: Somewhat Slanted Seams.
 And if, in the meantime,
you too want to feel
the four selvedge magic,
(and are willing to take the risk of life take-overs)
Rebecca Mezoff and I
are having an unprecedented one day sale
on our online four selvedge warping class FRINGELESS.
The class will be 25% off on Monday, December 2nd, 2019.
The code is:
AllFourSides
(fyi- Rebecca's other amazing classes are  15% off that day only
with the codeword: FyberMonday).

ps -- AND LOOK!
It's now Tuesday,
the sweater got dry,
and amidst all the things that I thought would keep me from blogging today
(why I wrote most of this yesterday),
I had time for a quick snap!

Mock Turtle Somewhat Slanted
+ a sliver of (one of my many)  Sarah-Dippity skirts
= a  warm and comfy outfit
for a busy day.
Yum.

Omg, I love the weaving. The indigo and that brown, so perfect together! The coffee filters look fantastic as yarn, their little (ok, not stitches, is there a name for the little bumps they make as they go over the up/down bits? -Anyway, they looks so even and perfect. (I am so not a weaver, haha) did you plan the color shift, or did it just happen because of the different shades of coffee stain?

I planned the color shift with the indigo - the coffee filters just did what they did. Be fun to plan though, and try to control where teh shifts happen though

Sarah, you should ask the Ravelry team about your weaving PDFs. There are weaving groups there, including a tapestry weaving one. Thank you for all the yarny goodness and inspiration! I have a lovely basket of yarn just waiting to become a Somewhat Slanted Sweater. I just have to work it in around the tapestry I'm weaving for a Christmas gift ....

Ok I will. The Bag on a Box seems like a fun thing for a first weaving project — and a way to use up lots of knitting leftovers...

Well I asked and just heard back — no weaving instructions, only knitting and crochet at this time!
Good to know for sure. And thanks for getting me to ask.

Sarah, I love your blogs, your work, and your ideas and inspiration.

Please check with Ravelry. There are weaving groups, and even bobbin lace groups, which I joined several years ago

As i just wrote in answer to Deb, the Ravelry Team said no weaving. Maybe some day if people ask, but my guess is they want to try to keep it focused. Happily, people can link to the PDF on my website if they want it. Thanks for the encouragement anyway!

funny that i've been making flax paper, then i colored it with indigo pigment, and the little swathes that go into the retention aid treated pulp resemble that ribbon of indigo, the one you captured. some of the flax paper was dyed with black walnut, too. is there something in the air this week?

The swirl is heavenly & the sweater divine. So grateful for bossy fibers and a touch of acquiescence (spelling?).

Hi Sarah - any chance you can give those of us who bought your patterns before they went up on Ravelry a code so we can have the Rav copy too? This means I can store it in my Ravelry library too rather than just on my pc at home.

Great idea! I’m working on it.

Once again you have blown me away!
I love both the weaving and the sweater!
I have 2 sweaters started...a cardigan and a pullover. I go back and forth between the 2....so neither one grows!
(Short attention span I guess😂)
Thanks for the heads up on the sale for the class!!

Your blog is an inspiration :)
I'm so glad to see the Rav links. Sometimes I seem to lose blogs, but now I can be sure of finding you again thru rav favorites. And wow, that Spin-Off 25th Anniversary Sweater!
I'm a knitter who has thought about spinning and weaving since I was about 20, and saw a Navajo loom on display at a museum. I sat on the floor and drew it, in hopes of building one someday. This was WAY before the internet and google and digital photography - a sketch was the best I could do!
Now knitting is becoming more and more difficult due to arthritis, and I'm hoping that weaving won't be demanding in quite the same way because 2020 is going to be the year I try weaving at last :)
