two baskets and a book--

12/24/2019

Picture
--aka: three projects to keep
my holiday angst
 in check.
Picture
1.  a twined basket
made with
dead leaf cordage
(iris, daylily, cornhusk)
 and coffee filter yarn
Picture
photographed on yet another
hand spun coffee filter experiment.
Picture
2. a marvelous book
by Kate Davies
Picture
that arrived in Idaho
soaking wet,
Picture
its wrinkled pages stuck together,
and binding falling apart,
Picture
roughly but satisfyingly mended

with a lopsided eggbeater drill,
Picture
some hand spun linen,
and a couple of needles,
Picture
now the middle of being read
with enormous enjoyment
(extra powerful since it is once again sturdy)--
and with particular joy
because Kate's first chapter
is on mending....
Picture
3. a lopsided willow object
intended to hold gifts
(you know -- roll it around
and open the present
that falls out the hole...)

Picture
that turned out to be too big
to fit through any doors in my house
Picture

but which nevertheless
makes a fine blind
Picture
for photographing
the rare and non-migratory
 ten foot pink flamingo.
Picture
Life's grand and absurd, eh?
Might as well
let the good times roll on
(even when the gifts inside
 are invisible).

It curls my toes with delight that you mended that book! (Also: That's an outstanding flamingo. From the peanut gallery, I'm giving you a slow clap of deep appreciation.)

Sarah, if the pages are still damp you might want to either freeze the book so that mold doesn't consume it, or sprinkle silica (for drying flowers) inside the pages and let dry. We just "mended" 40 some books this way when a water pipe drenched a section of our library shelves at our genealogical library in Seattle.

I love this! the cute little tiny basket, the huge eight-ball one that dispenses random presents, and the fact that Kate Davies' book brought you another totally unexpected mending job, as you love. Wheesht.

Thank you Sarah for a year of magic and smiles, the absolutely wonderful sketches and so many tips along the way! I have taken up the Fringeless mandate and will be working away all winter to make covers for my own small books and some tiny 'novice' beauties for framing. Just so I remember the inspiration and the fun! Blessings. Love the last drawing - Have a wonderful New Year!!! Imagine 2020!

Kate Davies was, in a manner of speaking, a sort of neighbour! Ok, she lived up on the muir and I was in the village, but I'd been following her wool adventure for a while. Must get that book, obviously. Sorry it arrived in a soggy state, but, well, you do what you do best, Sarah: transmogrify things; make them self-sufficient again.
Happy Christmas to you and yours, and the best of New Years when it arrives (as we say in this part of the world).

Thank you for your blog posts. I’m a complete novice at spinning and weaving, but you inspired me to get a drop spindle and in the absence of any other fibres, start practising with dog fur.

My copy just arrived today and having read the first half of 1st chapter on mending: it makes perfect sense to promote this book. LOL, having your book arrive soaking wet it only seemed right for your default of making it right with your bookbinding skills. The aurhor would be sorry it came damaged yet redeemed with your expertise! A lesson learned for those who first think to toss it out.

For followers of Sarah and her sister Evelyn, two women with kindred spirits, their a way of life, this book fits how they live and generously share without preaching. Thank you Sarah for leading me to this book.
