When do you stop mending?

2/21/2017

Picture
It's probably time if the leather tears when removing the old soles,
Picture

and certainly when when previous patches are falling apart.
Picture
But here's an old toothbrush,
and that bottle of shampoo I don't use because it turns my hair yellow.
Picture
A little scrub means they'll look less disgusting
when I hang them on the wall.
Picture
But I don't want a shoe shrine.
And I'm not ready to toss them in the compost.
Just a few stitches.
Picture
And hey -- here is that pile of leather scraps my friend Ivy game me.
Picture
None are large or sturdy enough for a new pair or shoes.
Picture
But there are so many colors!
Picture
I guess there is life in the old shoes yet.
Picture
I see that it is about a year and a half since I last resoled these shoes,
and three years almost exactly since I made them.
For the technically minded among you,
I run about 25 miles a week which makes about 1500 miles per set of soles, give or take,
since sometimes in the summer I wear a yellow canvas pair,
and sometimes I wear no shoes at all...

Those shoes are great. At what point does the "Ship of Theseus" kick in and they become not the original shoes?

That is the question Lisa!
"My Grandmother's axe which has had four new handles and two new heads..."

My son is currently rebuilding a boat with this same issue. In the end, it may just be the hardware that doesn't get replaced. But it feels like the same boat somehow.

With shoes, I feel like I could replace the soles several times and as long as the uppers are the original shape -- molded to my feeet-- then they're that pair of shoes!

And then there is Nancy's thought below -- as long as the original feet are wearing them?

I'm feeling pretty metaphorical about all this shoe analysis...perhaps I can resole myself, bright colors required.

Sarah, anyone would think you were attached to these.

Ruth, I'm with you!

Lisa, they will remain the original shoes as long as they go on the original feet, perhaps?

Just a touch, Nancy! And now that I'm back running in them (as of this morning), I have to admit that i feel like I have more bounce and energy with these shoes than with the back-up pair. Could be the natural rubber soles of course, which is so forgiving and friendly. Or it could be the soul of the shoe. Hard to tell!

I think a little resoling never hurt anyone. A few metaphorical snipped threads, some colorful patches and out we can go into the world, brave and strong.

such lovely shoes. You must have great feet. My feet are shot after being on them for so many years as a nurse. I always envy fun shoes like this...

Ah, Linda -- my feet are pretty strong these days, but I spent two years gradually accustoming them to minimalist/ barefoot running so I didn't hurt any of hte little bones and muscles that had always been protected. And now that I land on my forefoot instead of heel, my knees are WAY happier.
Alas, I can only wear such shoes for running though, when my now strong arch is fully engaged. Working at home or standing around my arches get lazy and need support (Dansko clogs are perfect). When I tried no support at any time my plantar fasciitis returned....
Nursing must be the hardest foot profession there is though. Piece of cake being a weaver..

I love this so very much. Definitely those shoes have soul.

Your shoes have become as lovely as the woven white winter wool. I love your alliteration as much as I do all your weaving, dyeing and clothing efforts.
