Wintry ways...

Picture
Listening to the snow melt...
Wow-
it's March!

How are you doing?
Picture
Me--I am well,
(how happifying is that?)
And the snow is melting!
Picture
It's amazing to be back here--
 familiar and strange
at the same time.
Picture
I mean
after three months
there is so much to say,
and also, nothing at all.
Picture
For while listening
to other people express essential ideas
with perfection and beauty--
Picture
Bone; Hand Woven Tapestry; 3" x 4.75"; warp--wool; weft--hand twisted milkweed, used coffee filters (paper yarn); indigo; 2020
--I've been spending my days
with one word at a time.
Picture
Four Selvedge Tapestry--so much easier to unwind the supplementary warp when you can spread it all the way across the room!
I mean--
quag.
Isn't it lovely?
What a thing
to get to balance
(or try at any rate)
on its delicious
q-centric
syllable.
Picture
And really,
does a person really need
entire sentences?
Picture
Even my inner Storymaker
has been mostly OK with it.

She is all about words to be sure,
usually ready to cram in
as many as she can
(Verbs!!! Adjectives!!!!!
Parenthetical Asides!!!!),
but it turns out
that reading dictionaries
studying etymology,
and debating the merits
of this word
or that
is wildly entertaining.
(OMG--a double ff-- YES!)

Almost as satisfying
as having chopped
the ice dams
off the roof.
Picture
Now it could be
that writing this essay
back in December
for my friend Debbie Lee's
monthly blog: Witness Wilderness,
was all the Storymaker needed.
Picture

Or maybe she has just been biding her time,
waiting for the thaw
while the Luminist blissed out
on quiet(ish) winter days.
Picture
Either way,
we're decidedly out of shape
for this blogging biz
and it might take a while
 to fully emerge
from our wintry ways.
Picture
Though I suppose that is
what spring is all about, eh?

Welcome back! You have been missed! But clearly you have had a productive few months! Brava!

Seed-that is what spring is all about. Although it feels to early here (MN) to see 57 degrees in the forecast.

Oh how you were missed- your timing is perfect for I was beginning to ask around if I was missing out- no you were completing your well deserved hiatus from your groupies-
Nevertheless your hands have been busy producing the series of single words.
Welcome back and together we ALL welcome spring with your company.

The phrase, "I'm at a loss for words," comes to mind, perhaps because that is so-not-the-case here, for you. Your words are a gift. I may never have been so smitten with words as when I have enjoyed them in your weaving. Many many thanks!

Valerie

The one word weavings are just right. May the thaw and the return to light help all of us wake from the wintry slumber. Very cold in Central New York today(3), but warmer temps and sheep shearing next week, so Spring is on its way.

Beautiful! Sometimes one word has a quality about it and all others drop away. I love "duff" and "dark" especially. I've been admiring your work from afar for a while, but these just spoke to me so directly, I had to tell you!

Happy march, happy thaw, happy return!

I cannot tell you how high my heart leaped to see the Field Guide to Needlework pop up in my email! Happy emergence from hibernation!

Sarah, I love your woven words! I have been writing jueju, a seven word four line Classical Chinese poetic form. Twenty eight monosyllables make a poem. Or you can have five syllable/ word lines. I am learning to love monosyllables. There are so many great ones in English.

Sarah
3/3/2021 05:20:36 pm

Oh my goodness -Jueju — what a marvelous form. I’m entranced without having yet read any, for I’ve been entranced by single syllable word play since I began this series of nouns (some of which are also verbs and adjectives). I read them out loud every day in all sorts of odd orders as I stand in front of the wall where I have pinned them. Now suddenly imagining making a big pile (I have about 35 so far...), then shuffling and drawing them in groups of seven, like cards, just to see what shows up.

I was thinking of you this morning and there you are!!! Glad you are back. I have been weaving homonyms this winter, so we have a word thing in common, though in totally different ways.

What a wonderful joyful surprise to see your email and your blog again this late evening (it arrives around 11 pm here in Ireland) bringing a warm smile and lovely woven connection across oceans. Thanks Sarah

Hi Sarah, i've missed your blog. Also, I tried to email you to show you some pictures of how i've warped my rigid heddle loom for 4 selvedge weaving...i think i read somewhere that you hadn't seen it on a rigid heddle loom. let me know if you'd like to see what i've done and i'll send you the pictures.

So lovely to have you back. Just wanted to let you know that you deserve enablement points. I have managed to avoid the weaving rabbit hole until now enjoying your big, detailed tapestries and your elegant word tapestries. Your little houses did me in. How can something so small and simple be so moving? I am now the owner of a tapestry loom and Rebecca Mezoff's new book and I am working my way through it. It is all your fault! Thanks! Denise

Sarah, I, too, am delighted you are back. I, too, was thinking of you just yesterday (I bought a gorgeous "backstrap table loom" from handywomanshop.com, and plan to weave narrow linen yardage with Coptic tapestry inserts on her). Also, your "So Cozy" drawing reminded me that my brother, when a toddler, called socks "footie gloves" (with, I believe, a long "o", so rhymes with "groves.")

Thank you for today's smiles!

Chère Sarah,

Que cela me fait plaisir "de vous retrouver" ! Que le temps passe vite !
Ca me fait plaisir que vous alliez bien !

Tout est tellement beau, si fin, si délicat, si sophistiqué que vous faites, les dessins, les tissages ...

Merci d'apporter cette bonté et cette joie dans le monde !

Amicalement,
Szilvia de Paris

NEWT! One of the best words ever invented...it was the "N" in the child's animal ABC book I read to pieces growing up, and it sadly just does not come up in everyday conversation enough.
(I was able to fulfill my childhood fantasy of meeting the "Y"- a yak, of course, in Bhutan a few years back- so maybe a newt is in the cards for 2021. Fingers crossed...and welcome back.)

It is interesting that I was thinking of you and came to look. I hadn’t heard from you (no posts to sigh and pore over.) but you were in my mind. I had no idea that you had stopped posting here. I thought I had been the one who was away... lol. I hope your time away was everything you needed it to be. How wonderful that you are immersed in one word moments. Like blessings. Happy Spring!
